Once a year during the most prosperous agricultural season, the main island of Shinkami Dao will hold a Cultural Culinary Festival to celebrate the bountiful harvest. The art of cooking is a timeless tradition to the citizens of the Inner Kingdom, and in order to keep this spirit of shameless indulgence alive, this festival was born. During this festival, island inhabitants are encouraged to make and share their favorite family dishes and recipes, bringing as much food as they like to what is essentially an island-wide potluck meal. Food stands and grand tables of meals are set up in a garish display of wealth and gluttony, and colorful banners and lanterns are hung all around the island’s center.
Although it may sound like an all-inclusive bonding experience, this culinary festival is actually quite exclusive. It is not celebrated on the outlying islands, and unless they are formally invited by a mainland citizen, most outsiders are not usually welcomed. Of course, there is not much of a structured form of “border patrol” between islands, so its commonplace for some of the lower-class citizens of Shinkami Dao to island hop during the festival, steal as much food as they can fit into their bags, and bring it home to their families before dark.
It should be noted that rarely, if ever, do any members of the royal family attend such a public event.
